Fishhook and Siege Line: Gettysburg and Vicksburg in Photographs and Battle Maps

November 19, 2008 - July 19, 2009

Using reproduction cartes de visite (CDV) of Union and Confederate officers from the collections of the Museum and private collector Robert Drane of Madison, this unique exhibit highlights the first and third days at Gettysburg and the many battles and skirmishes during the Vicksburg Campaign in 1863. CDV portraits of the generals and senior staff will be placed on large scale reproductions of the battle maps to emphasize the lines of battle. The map of the Vicksburg Campaign was hand drawn by Hosea Rood, a veteran of the 12th Wisconsin Infantry who oversaw the GAR Memorial Hall in the State Capitol. The Gettysburg map is reprinted from an 1877 pamphlet titled The Rebel Invasion of Maryland and Pennsylvania, and highlights the names of Union and Confederate genreals and the battle lines as they stood at the end of each day of battle.
