Museum Exhibits

An important aspect of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum's mission is to produce exhibits that reflect our commitment to recognizing Wisconsin's citizen-soldiers, discuss timely issues, and showcase veteran artwork. In recent years, we have hosted a number of short-term art shows, including "Long Shadow," a collection of Vietnam-themed murals by local artist David Giffey and "The Art of War," a collection of paintings, mixed media pieces, and sculptures borrowed from the Vietnam Veterans Art Museum in Chicago. Our photographic exhibits, all of which feature images from our vast archival collections, are well-received by museum patrons, especially those highlighting the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. With your support, we can continue to seek out the best traveling exhibits in the country, as well as internally develop shows that feature our own Wisconsin veterans.

Research Center Collection Development

The library and archive collections of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum have a national reputation.  Although most materials are acquired through donation by Wisconsin veterans and their families, purchase of materials is necessary to fill collection gaps and build on collection strengths.  Many books, especially those self-published by a Wisconsin veteran, are available for a limited time only and must be purchased immediately.  Books concerning the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan must be purchased now to meet research demand.

The statewide circulation reaches approximately 5,000 people. Corporations willing to underwrite an issue of the Bugle will receive a full-page ad, mention in an article, and permanent recognition on the Wisconsin Veterans Museum's League of Honor Wall (located at the entrance of the museum). Wisconsin Veterans Oral History Program

The Wisconsin Veterans Oral History Program honors the men and women who gave their youth, their hopes, their aspirations, and their lives to serve our nation by recording and preserving their stories and experiences.  Your donation to the Wisconsin Veterans Oral History Program will preserve their voices.  Established in 1994, the program is an active one and currently boasts more than 1,000 oral history interviews.  These stories both complement and extend the archives, library, and object collections of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum by adding a compelling personal narrative of experience and perspective. More readily accessible than other oral history programs, WVM interviews are requested by libraries throughout the country and are quickly made available to Wisconsin teachers and students.

Distinguished Lecture Series

Beginning in early 2006, the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of History and the Center for World Affairs and the Global Economy (WAGE), developed the Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS). This highly regarded and well-attended series of programs draws some of the best and brightest military, political, and cultural historians in the United States today. Past speakers include Brian Linn (Texas A&M), Allan Millett (National World War II Museum), Robert Schulzinger (University of Colorado), and David Kennedy (Stanford University). The DLS is the premier forum for intelligent and informed discussion by professional historians in the state of Wisconsin. Attendance for these events has been outstanding, bringing in new visitors each event. We hope to host four DLS events each year and with two already confirmed for 2007, we are well on our way.

Vietnam Publication

As of February 2007, the Wisconsin Veterans Museum has nearly 150 unique archival collections, over 170 oral history interviews, and 700 artifacts from veterans of the Vietnam War. We put many of these to use during the development of "In the Belly of the Dragon: Life and Death in I Corps," a new 1,000+ square foot temporary exhibit that opened in September 2006. The high praise of the Vietnam veteran community, the local media, and the general public, and an ever-expanding Vietnam War archives, has encouraged us to publish a book on the stories and experiences of Wisconsin's Vietnam veterans. Utilizing letters from the front, vivid images, and one-of-a-kind artifacts, we hope to create a document that each one of our Vietnam veterans will be proud of.
